THUMBS

1999 - present

Thumbs is a comic strip I created in 1999, inspired by a Greyhound Bus trip from Rochester, NY to Greensboro, NC. On that trip I witnessed the utter contempt adults have for children and their brilliant minds. Most of these strips are inspired by numerous witnessings of adults hitting, lying to, swearing at, yelling at, ignoring and generally disregarding the wonderful, genious and hopefully unbreakable spirit of children.

GENESIS

2002

The idea to illustrate the Bible as a comic strip came to me on another Greyhound Bus trip, this time from San Fransisco to the Carolinas via LA. It was a 73 hour trip and to bide my time, I purchased a King James version of the Bible. Like many Catholics, I had never read the Bible, and thought it might be good for my spiritual life. Dead Wrong. Reading the Bible, I learned about sex, violence, deceipt, espionage, guerrilla warfare, cheating, stealing, rape, murder, and many other things. Now, the fact that this all is written about didn't bother me, it was the fact that I grew up thinking the people who perpetrated these murders and acts of terror were the very people who were presented as heros of the Bible, people I should look up to. In Genesis, I present the characters of the Bible as they truly are, with all the sex, gore and violence INCLUDED.

The Chain Gang

1994-1995

Whether on field trips, at pole-vaulting events, or simply in class, my friend Bill Maley and I used to draw funny little cartoons about people chained to things in horrible and funny ways.
